Freeman Rides Roller Coaster During First Trip to Oklahoma

Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (June 24, 2014) – Cody Freeman endured a roller-coaster weekend during his first visit of the season to Oklahoma.

“It was full of highs and lows, but overall we had a great time,” he said. “It was an awesome experience. We’ve already revamped our schedule to make a two-day trip back there in July.”

Freeman kicked off his tripleheader in Oklahoma last Thursday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa with the NOW600 Series.

After advancing from eighth to seventh place in his heat race, Freeman started the main event on the inside of the seventh row.

“Being in Texas, tracks don’t stay tacky long,” he said. “That track never lost a drop of moisture. In the feature the car was just way too tight. We had the opportunity to challenge a few times, but the car was too tight and we never could make a pass safely or to where it would actually stick.”

With the feature cut to 15 laps because of impending weather and time restraints, Freeman spent the entire main event just outside the top 10 and he finished with a 12th-place result.

On Friday, Freeman ventured to Outlaw Motorsports Park in Wainwright for another NOW600 event.

“In the heat race we knew we had a good car,” he said. “On the first lap I made a move to the bottom in turns three and four and was going to pass fourth and third, but the cars on the outside got into trouble and ended up coming down.”

Freeman, who started the heat race on the outside of the third row, was tire hopped and his left rear tire flattened. He was unable to restart the race and was forced to line up 15th for the 20-lap main event.

“We knew the car was good and fast,” he said. “We went with the mindset that let’s take it easy the first five or six laps. We made a few passes. It was a real confidence booster for us. It was the first time we got to see the car compared to the talent and competition up there.”

Freeman rallied to post a ninth-place finish, which was his 13th top 10 of the season.

The weekend concluded on Saturday at Port City Raceway.

“I’d say Port City Raceway lived up to its expectations,” he said. “It was fast. It was tight. The level of competition was through the roof.”

Freeman picked up a position in his heat race to finish fifth, which relegated him to the pole of the B Main. He finished second in the consolation race to earn a transfer into the main event.

“The car was really fast and really good,” he said. “When we made the A Main it felt like a win. Of all the tracks that meant the most to me.”

After starting on the outside of the seventh row, Freeman maneuvered into the top 10 before disaster struck late in the race.

“Going into turn three coming to the white flag something broke in the engine and it just locked up,” he said.

Freeman came up a lap short of finishing the race and he was credited with 14th. Unfortunately, that also depleted the team of its backup engine and will force them to miss several weeks.

“Both motors are currently down so we’ve decided to do a midseason maintenance,” he said. “We’re sending our shocks off to get serviced. We sent our carburetors off for repairs and cleaning. We’re going on an engine search. We would like to return to the track no later than July 18.”

That would be the next trip to Oklahoma, where Freeman hopes to compete at Creek County Speedway on July 18 and at Port City Raceway on July 19.
