Flud Lands Win No. 70 While Thornton And Stone Take First Career Dirt2Media NOW600 Wins!

Bryan Hulbert – SWEET SPRINGS, Mo. (April 28, 2023) The long-awaited return of the Dirt2Media National Open Wheel 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division to Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex did not disappoint as Stone Smith and Ricky Thornton, Jr. scored their first career wins before Frank Flud slid his way into win No. 70.

A dogfight of an A-Feature that saw three leaders and countless slide jobs, it came down to a two-lap shootout with Frank Flud capturing the victory. Swapping the lead at the start with Jack Thomas, the No. 63 faded as Jett Hays came to life. To the point on Lap 4, Hays held off several challenges from Flud and Dylan Kadous.

Getting back to second on Lap 20, the race looked like a sure thing for Hays until the caution on the white flag lap. Reverting to a green, white, checkered finish, Flud was on the attack. Retaking the lead on the white flag, the RUJO Racing No. 81 held on to victory by 0.140-seconds over Jett Hays. Dylan Kadous, in third, missed scoring silver by 0.081-seconds. Trey Zorn crossed fourth, with Brecken Reese in fifth.

Leading start to finish in the Non-Wing A-Feature, Ricky Thornton, Jr. had to fend off Frank Flud at the start of the feature. Caution on the initial start, the No. 20rt was able to jump to the point both times. Quickly to the top of the Missouri oval, the race behind Thornton was ongoing between Shawn Mahaffey, Frank Flud, and Jason McDougal with the No. AD1 getting and holding the runner-up spot over the No. 81 and No. 11k.

Slowly closing on the No. 20rt through the wingless feature event, traffic kept low to allow Thornton to clear. Caution on Lap 17, Ricky rolled back to the cushion and again put distance on the field. Winning by 0.711-seconds, the runner-up spot went to Jason McDougal. Third to Frank Flud, the No. 81 held off the charge of Shawn Mahaffey for the show position. Jackson Frisbie completed the top five.

Unrelenting on the cushion during the Restricted A-Main, Stone Smith used a mid-race restart to finally get the run on Cale Lagroon, who had led since the start. Chased closely by the No. 24c following the lap 16 pass, Smith was able to start pulling away through the final stages of the A-Feature. Cale Lagroon crossed second, with Carson Bolden rolling seventh to third. Mattix McBride made up ten spots to finish fourth, with Cash Lacombe fifth.

Hitting her marks for 20 laps, Blainey Woods held off Sawyer McBride for the Junior Sprint win. WJ Campbell, Collin Pruitt, and Gunner Griffin completed the top five.

Friday’s event drew a field of 118 entries across the four divisions. The series is back at Sweet Springs on Saturday, April 29. Teams will draw in between 4:45 P.M. and 5:45 P.M. with the Driver’s Meeting at 6:00 P.M. Grandstands open at 5:00 P.M., Hot Laps are at 6:30 P.M., and Racing is at 7:30 P.M. (CDT). Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for Youth (6-12), and free for kids five and under. Pit Passes are $30 per class entered.
