Mahaffey Adds Another Dirt2Media NOW600 Win While Hays and Lunsford Break Through At Sweet Springs!

Bryan Hulbert – SWEET SPRINGS, Mo. (April 29, 2023) Keeping the weekend’s theme of adding first-time winners at the Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex, Jett Hays and Logun Lunsford broke into Victory Lane while Shawn Mahaffey added another win to his record with the Dirt2Media National Open Wheel 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division.

Ripped away on Friday in a two-lap duel at the finish with Frank Flud, Ft. Worth’s Jett Hays sailed the wall on Brecken Reese on the second lap and never looked back during the A-Class feature event. Moving to second on Lap 3, Ricky Thornton, Jr. hustled the bottom on Hays.

Pulling to the No. 11j numerous times, Hays could keep pace as the laps went on. Finally, having to move his line in the closing laps allowed Thornton to gain ground. Closing fast on the final lap, it was not enough as Hays found the checkered flag with 0.317-seconds to spare. Thornton, in second was chased by Frank Flud. Fourth went to Brecken Reese, with Garrett Benson in fifth.

Career win No. 4 for Shawn Mahaffey in Non-Wing, the No. 11k shot from sixth to first in five laps. Working the gutter all the way around the one-sixth-mile oval, Mahaffey held off several restart attempts.

Finding the win with a 0.963-second gap, the battle for second finally went the way of Ricky Thornton, Jr. for his second runner-up finish of the night. Having to race his way in through a B-Feature, Frank Flud stormed to the final podium step. Rolling the cushion to second early, Jason McDougal slipped to fourth in the closing laps, with Trey Zorn crossing fifth.

Leading the first 14 laps, Logun Lunsford spent the next eight trying to retake the point from Cale Lagroon. Both in search of their first NOW600 win; the change-up came on a restart with three to go. Erasing a nearly one-second lead, Lagroon had been rolling the center and pulling away while Lunsford stuck the hub.

Keeping those same lines on the restart, Logun pulled up on the No. 24 off the second turn. Edging into the lead by 0.069-seconds with two laps to go, the race to the checkered flag was even closer, with Lunsford holding on by 0.049-seconds. The pair were chased by Kyle Hooper, Chase McDougal, and Hanke Soares to complete the top five.

Runner-up on Friday, Tulsa’s Sawyer McBride found one more spot on Saturday. Grabbing the lead on Lap 2, Sawyer survived numerous restarts throughout the 20-lap affair. DJ Beach crossed second, with Friday night’s winner, Blainey Woods, in third; Gunner Griffin and Liam Barton made up the top five.

Growing the field slightly on Saturday, 124 entries were on hand.

Racing continues for the Dirt2Media National Open Wheel 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division on Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, at Port City Raceway in Tulsa, Okla.
